Evolutionary dynamics of shared niche construction

چکیده

Many species engage in niche construction that ultimately leads to an increase in the carrying capacity of the population. We have investigated how the specificity of this behaviour affects evolutionary dynamics using a set of coupled logistic equations, where the carrying capacity of each genotype consists of two components: an intrinsic part and a contribution from all genotypes present in the population. The relative contribution of the two components is controlled by a specificity parameter γ, and we show that the ability of a mutant to invade a resident population depends strongly on this parameter. When the carrying capacity is intrinsic, selection is almost exclusively for mutants with higher carrying capacity, while a shared carrying capacity yields selection purely on growth rate. This result has important implications for our understanding of niche construction, in particular the evolutionary dynamics of tumor growth.

Evolutionary consequences of niche construction and their implications for ecology.

Organisms regularly modify local resource distributions, influencing both their ecosystems and the evolution of traits whose fitness depends on such alterable sources of natural selection in environments. We call these processes niche construction. We explore the evolutionary consequences of niche construction using a two-locus population genetic model, which extends earlier analyses by allowin...

Life's What You Make: Niche Construction and Evolutionary Art

This paper advances newmethods for ecosystemic approaches to evolutionary music and art. We explore the biological concept of the niche and its role in evolutionary dynamics, applying it to creative computational systems. Using the process of niche construction organisms are able to change and adapt their environment, and potentially that of other species. Constructed niches may become heritabl...

THE QUARTERLY REVIEW of Biology NICHE CONSTRUCTION THEORY: A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR ECOLOGISTS

Niche construction theory (NCT) explicitly recognizes environmental modification by organisms (“niche construction”) and their legacy over time (“ecological inheritance”) to be evolutionary processes in their own right. Here we illustrate how niche construction theory provides useful conceptual tools and theoretical insights for integrating ecosystem ecology and evolutionary theory. We begin by...

Effects of Temporal Locality of Ecological Processes on Coevolution of Learning and Niche Construction

Roles of ecological processes in evolution are attracting much attention in evolutionary studies. Learning and niche construction are regarded as ecological processes that can affect the course of evolution directly or indirectly. However, the effects of mutual interactions between them on evolution are still poorly understood. Our purpose is to provide insight into the coevolutionary dynamics ...

Spatial distributions of niche-constructing populations

Niche construction theory regards organisms not only as the object of natural selection but also an active subject that can change their own selective pressure through eco-evolutionary feedbacks. Through reviewing the existing works on the theoretical models of niche construction, here we present the progress made on how niche construction influences genetic structure of spatially structured po...
